Chapter 17
Thoughts of Louisa had been hard to dispel, despite the long hours Paul had spent with Mortimer, attempting to make some headway on his case. It was difficult when Mortimer was all bluster and no sense. The other areas in Paulâs life were suffering too. His family, for example, had been almost unbearable. His mother had been riding an emotional pendulum in the week since Louisa had left to Bellmont Manor, and as a consequence, his fatherâs patience was stretched thin. Eager to leave the house, Paul mounted Starling and rode hard all the way to the Dome. It wasnât until he was seated inside and surrounded by his dearest friends that his anxiety finally started to subside.
âHave your eyes been opened to the potential joys of matrimony?â Miles asked, passing him a bowl of nuts.
He took a handful. âYes, for quite some time Iâve thought you should marry. Iâm pleased youâve brought it up, as Iâve been waiting for a tactful way to share my thoughts.â He glanced at Lisette and caught her blush. It was about time Miles put her out of her misery and propose.
âI was referring to you and Miss Cox.â Miles crunched down hard on a nut.
âShe has my approval,â Lisette said, leaning into a decorative pillow.
âAnd mine.â Jemma stood by one of the many windows, looking out over Ianâs estate. âNot only is she perfectly lovely, but she is clever. I like a woman who is intelligent. I know youâve heard me pledge to die a spinster, but I very much think Paul should change his mind.â
âStuff and nonsense,â Ian growled. âMiss Cox is too clever for her own good. Sheâs a scheming debutante if ever Iâve seen one.â
âEnough.â Paul couldnât listen to Ian disparage Louisa. Passing the nuts to Tom, Paul stood. With nowhere to go in the room, he walked behind his seat and gripped the back of it. âWe arenât here to discuss my interest in Miss Cox or her character. Weâre here to go over the two meetings held by our mothers and come up with a plan of defense.â
âSaid like a true barrister.â Tom chuckled. âWell done. Straight to the point.â
Ian stood too and joined Jemma by the window. âRight,â he said. âIâm sorry for making things too personal. With my home bombarded and my mother inviting the town to my house, Iâm not myself. Letâs have a report on the meetings. Tom, you go first.â
Tom finished chewing and cleared his throat. âThe first meeting was at my house directly after Paulâs little attic rendezvous.â Paul groaned, but Tom continued without a pause. âThe mothers shut themselves into our drawing room but left the door to the veranda wide open. I was able to hear every word. Youâll never believe what they said.â
âWhat?â Paul stood straighter.
Tomâs lips curled into a smile. âThe goal is to continue with their original plan of engaging you to Miss Cox.â
That was hardly news. Paul pinched the bridge of his nose. He would get through this.
